Signs of Learning Difficulties in Mathematics

*Difficulty linking a number to its symbol: asked to write the number (3), the child writes the number (4).

*Difficulty distinguishing numbers that face in opposite directions, such as (2) and (6) or (7) and (8) in Arabic: asked to write the number (7), the child writes (8), or the reverse.

*Difficulty writing numbers that require a particular orientation.

*The child reverses digits in different place-value columns, so the number (25) may be read or written as (52), and so on.

Difficulty mastering some of the concepts behind the basic arithmetic operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Here the student may be competent at simple addition or multiplication, for example, yet still make errors relating to other concepts, such as the place value of a digit (units, tens, hundreds) or the like.
